About

Sheffield Youth Orchestra is a registered charity, and was formed in 1964 to help young local musicians to gain real orchestral experience. It is managed by a council consisting of playing members and adult supporters. SYO meets weekly during term time, at the Central URC in the centre of Sheffield, S1 2JB on Saturday mornings, and performs between three and five concerts a year at venues all over Sheffield and sometimes further afield.

Regular social activities include an annual residential weekend, which is highly enjoyable and important to the ongoing development of the Orchestra.

The age group is predominantly 12-18 years but Associate Membership is open to former players now at University/College. The annual subscription (currently £100 for full members) is one of the lowest for a youth orchestra in England.

The musical standard required varies according to the instrument and the number of places available but generally a minimum standard of grade 5 is required

SYO has a playing strength of around 40 members. We are always keen to recruit new players and especially need all strings, brass, and a second oboe at present. If you would like to join SYO please send us an email or contact our Conductor, Steve Vickers on (Mob) 07855237869.
